Classic Hip-Hop
April 9th, 2005Every once in awhile, I gotta revisit the classics. Lately, I have been going through a rotation of my favorite classic hip-hop albums. It’s been awhile since I’ve done this, so I thought I’d commemorate the occasion by sharing a list of my old school faves. Granted, these would not be considered “old school” by heads that have been in the game for awhile (careful, there was slang back there), but they are to me. Hell, I was still poppin’ Flintsones chewables and pooping on my preschool floor when N.W.A. was saying “Fuck the Police!”, so gimmie a break. These are the albums that really cemented my love of hip-hop, and kicked-off my eventual decline into drug dealing, bitch slapping and blunt smoking…

If you haven’t heard any of the above albums, don’t freakin’ talk to me next time I see you, cuz we ain’t gonna relate homie. And if you try to come back with “You left off Digital Underground!” or “Where’s Das EFX?” on a comment, I’m gonna put the .44 to ya dome.
Ok, back to being a nerdy white-guy now…

I have a reasonable doubt that something might be missing from your list. As I don’t see anything from my homeboy or his reflection eternal. The list is just short of being Ill. Illmatic that is……
peace from the east. You might of left some ny brothers out…..

This list is defintely not an “all-time best hip-hop” list (that’s another post), it focused on what got my into hip-hop to start with. Nas, Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Mos Def came into my life a bit later…
Who were the artists that got you into hip-hop? Think back…

How could you leave off the J5 - Quality Control or Power in Numbers. Come the F%&# on brother.

Those are good. J5 gets honorable mention. But they didn’t get me in this game, that’s for sure…

The first Hip-Hop album that made me stop and listen would have been Kanye West, College Dropout. But I didn’t dive in head first until Madvillan, Madvillany. I still listen in wonder after the 60th time through. As my induction into Hip-Hop occurred recently with the help of the brotherhood, my old school favs don’t reach back too far. As well as my debt to J-Bone for the dice game behind Haggen. So I would have to narrow my list to 5(no specific order):
Madvillan, Madvillany
Key Tracks: Just hit play and turn it up biznicth.
Foreign Exchange, Connected
Key Tracks: Nic’s Groove, Raw Life
Rapper Big Pooh, Sleepers
Key Tracks: Now, Heart of the city
9th Wonder, Class is in Session
Key Tracks: Track 2, Track 4 (sorry, I don’t have the track names)
Little Brother, The Listening
Key Track: The way you do it, The Yo-Yo
Much apologozes to the godfather, I gotta download some of your shit….
