The Biggest Party of Our Life

June 6th, 2005

Things are on full tilt here as the preparations for the wedding bash are in full swing. It has been a little stressful to think of all the things that are going to go into this party. At the height of one of these stressfull episodes, Willa proclaimed to me that this was “The Biggest Party of Our Life!” and that I needed to put as much effort into it as that dubios title implies. But wow, that’s a hard title to live up to. Where do I start?

The logical place to begin was with an invitation. So I set out to create a design that really captured the spirit of what the party would be about. Willa seemed to like my drawings that I do, so she suggested sketching out the design first so we could have a template from which to build off of. That sounded like a good idea, so I went for it.

We are inviting people from all walks of life and all different ages, so the theme had to be universal. I decided on capturing three major elements of the party in my invitation: bar-b-q, fun, and lawn sports. I selected a iconic image to celebrate each one of these elements. First, for bar-b-q, the image is pretty straighforward:

Little Smokey Bar-B-Q

No suprises there, right? The next image I needed to select was one representing the fun element of the party. No problem, I knew just the universal image to draw:

40oz

Yup, I know it’s a good call, everyone likes 40’s. And finally to the last image to decide upon, that which represents lawn sports. We have many to choose from: Badminton, Bocce Ball, Red Rover. But not everyone likes those activities, so images of them are really not suitable as a universal representation of lawn sports for all those at the party. After thinking about the wide range of ages of the people that will be in attendance, I decided upon what I think is a very universal image:

The Ultimate Lawn Sport

Napping, passing out, snoozing, relaxing, whatever you want to call it, it is the universal lawn sport. After deciding on the imagery of the three main elements we wanted to communicate about the party, I was all ready to go. The last step was putting it all together in a single, unified sketch.

Here you have it, a sneak-peak at our impending wedding bash invitation:

Well done. And I’ll have my steak well-done on that bbq when it happens. Can I put in my order this early?

  2. nick Says:

You better wait to get an invitation before you start putting in your order. Now that I know you are not a cheap date (you probably want lobster with your steak too, huh?) I might have to reconsider…

Very cool sketches. Makes it hard to do any sketching on my blog without lookin’ like I’m copyin’. The biggest party of you life, already? Seems like this could happen several more times, then you’ll have to continually out do the last party of your life. Hoipefully I’m invited to all of them.

No way man, the world needs more sketches…

You are very creative! And very funny! However, I must admit I like the finished product which arrive in the mail this week even better :-) Your invites are beautiful!!! It’s obvious this took a lot of planning and a lot of production time. For the “biggest party of your life” you can be proud of what you have produced. (Perhaps your sketches may be more appropriate for your thank-you’s after the fact???)

Looking forward to a great bash!

    Love,
    Mom
