The Madness Is Over

June 6th, 2006

As I documented extensively in the Adventures in Commuting post, I have been commuting like a mofo over the past 3 years while working at City University.

Well boys and girls, that madness has finally ended! Yesterday I did my final commute to City University before moving to Seattle and I thought it would be fitting to do a final summary of the time I have spent in a car just getting to and from work over the past 3 years.

Here goes:

Total miles commuting: 64,800 miles

Explanation: Multiply 180 (miles round trip) by 3 (days per week) to get 540 miles traveled per week. Multiply that by 45 weeks (an estimate after subtracting vacation, holidays, sick days, etc. from 52 weeks) and then by 2 (years commuting 3 days/week) and you get: 48600. Add the additional year spent commuting 2 days a week and you get 64,800 miles.

Total time commuting: 60 days

Explanation: Multiply 4 (hours commuting each day) by 3 (days a week), and then by 45 weeks a year, and you get 540 hours spent commuting a year (which happened for 2 years). Add in the hours spent commuting 2 days a week for a year and you end up with 1440 hours or 60 days.

There you have it. I have basically spent 2 months of my life in the car getting to or from City University and now that era is over. But don’t worry, I’m not expecting to get out of the commuting doldrums yet, but being 16 miles from my work is much better than 90.

Instead, you’ll have to calculate how much time you commuting via Seattle Transit and the craze conversation you have with the loons that ride the bus. I bet inside a month or two, you’ll be witness to about the redemption of your lost soul and advised of the end of the world….
