Metering My Internet Usage
June 2nd, 2008This is an interesting article I came across today. Seems Time Warner is going to be piloting a program for new subscribers in Texas that will charge them extra after they go over a certain bandwidth usage each month.
Initially I balked at this, but I’m not so sure the general idea is that bad. If Internet use is to be treated like a utility, and a small percentage use the majority, then it makes sense that those folks who use it more pay more, just as they do when they use more electricity for instance.
I hope they come out with sweet mechanical gauges on the outside of my home just like the electric companies have as well!

Whateva! Easy to say when you don’t pay what the normal consumer pays for access. Why willing agree to being charged more when you’d be that person? I’m against it all the way.

Yeah, I’m not sure I would be that person necessarily, but I hear ya. That’s what I was thinking right away.
But seriously, if it means that I could get better internet speeds as a result…say you could essentially get 100mb or more if they went to this scale, that would be dope.

I’m hatin’ on TW trying to get more money disguising it as beneficial for the consumer. Especially when TV uses streaming media off the Internet. Nothing like changing the model early on to get us locked in for later.

How much do you think the 360 consumes a month?

I don’t know really, there is a discussion going on at my work about how you can measure you overall upload/download usage.
I will let you know if I find something to use to do that.
