LIVE Advisor Application
Completed in 2004
The goal of the LIVE Advisor project was to design a system that allowed prospective and current students to connect with a City University advisor in real-time through their web browser. The system was designed to be web-based and use Flash to enable the interaction between advisors and students. The underlying technology used for the real-time communication is Flash Communication Server. All of the “sessions” between students and advisors are tracked within a SQL Server database, which is accomplished using Flash Remoting technology.
I was the lead designer and developer for the LIVE Advisor system. Here is a sampling of the work I did for this project:
- Graphics/Imagery: I created all of the layouts, graphics, and other visual assets for the system.
- User Interface/Interaction: I designed and developed the flow of the user-interaction with the system.
- Flash: I deployed Flash Communication Server, designed and developed the Flash movies that interface with FCS, and designed the FCS application model that handles the functionality of the system.
- Programming: A large part of creating the LIVE advisor system involved integrating it with City University’s data structure and web portal. The integration was accomplished using ASP.NET, Flash Remoting and server-side ActionScript programming.
The LIVE Advisor project was very rewarding in that it required me to master a new technology (Flash Communication Server) and expand on my knowledge of Flash, which I am always interested in doing. The system was an immediate success when it was released, hosting over 100 help sessions in its first week of release. It has become an integral part of the support strategy for students and City University and also serves a dual-purpose as a lead-source generating tool for the University Relations (i.e. marketing) group.
