My.CityU Web Portal Re-Design

Completed in 2005

City University implemented a new PeopleSoft Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in the summer of 2005, and along with that came a new, fully-integrated web portal. The school had been using a custom portal developed by our IT team up until that time, but decided to move to the new off-the-shelf portal because of the built-in integration capabilities it had with our new system. This project involved re-designing and re-branding the PeopleSoft Enterprise Portal (8.9) with the City University brand and web standards.

I served as lead designer for the project, and was responsible for the following elements:

  • CSS: I developed a standard set of styles for every visual element within the system and created CSS-based layouts where the system allowed to make upgrades less painful.
  • Web Standards: I produced XHTML Transitional templates where the system allowed and incorporated web standards in all aspects of the design.
  • Graphics/Imagery: I re-branded the entire portal interface to be within City University’s Identity Standards with a combination of CSS and graphics work.
  • User Interface/Interaction: I lead in planning the navigation, organization of content, and how users interacted with the system.

The My.CityU re-design project coincided with a major overhaul of all web-based offerings at City University and the design proved effective for most users by making the transition to the new system as painless as possible. It served as great experience in branding an off-the-shelf product. Working within a strict framework poses unique design challenges, such as modifying HTML code embed in database tables, fitting imagery and color in pre-defined spaces and re-vamping many layers of delivered styles.
